History

The concept of Islamic economics was introduced to the public in 1991 when Bank Muamalat Indonesia was established, which was then followed by other financial institutions. At that time, sharia economic socialization was carried out by each Islamic financial institution. Aware of this, Islamic financial institutions gather and invite all interested parties to form an organization, with joint efforts to carry out structured and sustainable socialization programs to the public. This organization is called the "Sharia Economic Society Society" which is abbreviated as MES, the term in the Indonesian language is the Sharia Economic Community, in English is the Islamic Economic Society or in Arabic Mujtama 'al-Iqtishad al-Islamiy, was established on Monday, the 1st Muharram 1422 H, coincided on March 26, 2001 AD It was declared on Tuesday, the 2nd Muharram 1422 H in Jakarta.

The founders of MES are individuals, financial institutions, educational institutions, study institutions and business entities that are interested in developing Islamic economics. MES is based on Islamic Sharia, and is subject to the laws and regulations in force in the Republic of Indonesia, so that it is open to every citizen regardless of his religious beliefs. Established based on Deed No. 03 dated 22 February 2010 and updated in Deed No. 02 April 16, 2010 made before the Notary Rini Martini Dahliani, SH, in Jakarta, which deed was approved by the Minister of Justice and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia based on Decree No. AHU-70.AH.01.06, dated May 25, 2010 concerning Ratification of the Association and has been included in the additional state news No. 47 April 14, 2011.

At the beginning, MES was established only for Jakarta without any plan to expand it. But, it turned out that MES activities gave interest to the colleagues to carry out similar activities. Then, MES management and their colleagues agreed to establish MES in the regions with a provision to add the region name behind MES word. MES organizations which established in the regions are autonomously established respectively.

The name of the MES and the increasingly active role has led to more and more permission requests to establish MES in other regions. Increasing number of regional MES organizations has led regional MES managements to urge MES Management in Jakarta to unite all regional MES into one organization. Due to the pressure that getting stronger, the Extraordinary National Conference of the Sharia Economic Community was held in Jakarta in May 2006, precisely at the holding of the Indonesia Sharia Expo I. During the meeting, it was agreed that all Regional MES would gather in one national organization and MES management in Jakarta was appointed as Central Board and assigned to compile the changes in Statutes and By-Laws.

The impact of the development of Islamic economics in the region (provincial level) and regional (district / city level) is increasingly widespread and well organized. Currently MES has spread to 27 Provinces, 75 Regencies / Cities and 5 special regions abroad, namely Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom, Malaysia, Germany and Japan. Public outreach and education activities on the sharia economy increasingly have a positive impact on the community and of course the sharia financial industry.

On November 3-4. 2008 the Sharia Economic Community held the First National Conference as the highest forum for the organization. It was decided several things regarding the steps of the MES going forward, including the completion of the Statutes and By-Laws of the MES, the establishment of the Organizational Policy Lines, the National Work Program, Recommendations and the election of the New Chairperson, namely Dr. Muliaman D. Hadad for the management period of 1429-1432 H. He was the third general chairperson, where the first general chairman was Dr. Iwan Pontjowinoto and the second general chairman are Dr. Aries Muftie.

During the management period, MES made new breakthroughs including publishing practical guidelines for sharia business management in the form of a book entitled "Islamic Business Ethics", together with the National Committee on Governance Policy (KNKG) to compile General Guidelines for Sharia Business Good Governance, together with the Ministry of Communication and Information providing Open Source applications for Sharia Cooperatives and Amil Zakat, together with the Ministry of Public Housing introducing the waqf instrument as a provider of land for the construction of Flats, together with BI and IAEI holding a Sharia Banking Research Forum and publishing the National Scientific Journal "Islamic Finance Journal", together with the Indonesia Stock Exchange organizing Sharia Capital Market Schools and many others.

Every program that has been implemented must be evaluated in order to give even better results. On 21 Muharram 1432 H or to coincide with December 17, 2011 the Second National Conference was held again. In this meeting, it was agreed that the Indonesian Sharia Economy Roadmap as an Outline of Organizational Policy, sharpening national work programs and perfecting the Statutes / By-Laws in accordance with the current needs and conditions. Mr. Muliaman D. Hadad was re-elected as chairman for the second period.

Located at the Sultan Hotel Jakarta on Saturday 29 Muharram 1436 H or to coincide on November 22, 2014, MES once again held the 3rd National Conference. In this meeting, it was agreed that changes to the Statutes and By-Laws would strengthen organizational arrangements, including regarding the management period, financial system and treasury. As Chairman, was re-elected by acclamation Dr. Muliaman D. Hadad for the third period, namely the years 1436 - 1439 H.

MES is an independent organization, and not affiliated with any particular political party or CSO, but must continue to establish cooperation so that it can be accepted by all parties. Alhamdulillah, with all its activities, MES has received recognition in all walks of life, both from the ulama, practitioners, academics, government and legislature both at home and abroad.

In the future, it is expected that the role of MES in promoting the Islamic economy can be further enhanced. MES movers are those who are creative and have superior programs. MES is a partner of the government (legislative and executive) and also Bank Indonesia and the Financial Services Authority (OJK) in developing the Islamic economy. Together with the Indonesian Cleric Council (MUI) to encourage the government to realize Indonesia as the World Sharia Financial Center.
